 NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS WINTER NEWSLETTER
Happy winter season to all sports club members
A version of the newsletter will be available quarterly

The summer season climaxed with the end of the Cricket, Tennis, Rounders and Bowls season and with their end, begins the winter sports season.

Cricket
The cricket season ended well with the first team gaining promotion to the ECB Premier division and the 2nds and 3rds finishing 3rd in their leagues. Special mention must go to Ian Walkden and his team for being the first fully amateur side to clinch promotion to the semi professional ECB premier league. The juniors too had wonderful seasons with the under 9's and 17's finishing runners up in their leagues and the 11's, 13's and 15's coming close in their respective competitions. 2008 saw the advent of girls cricket which saw 4 girls selected for the district town team. The girls ended up winning the St Helens Recs cricket tournament and were runners up in the Newton tournament, not bad for their first year.

Newton 1st Team clinched promotion at Skelmersdale

l-r  back -  Mike Walkden, Chris Waite (WK), Danny Barlow, Liam Horsfield,  Aaron Scott

front - Ian Holcroft, Ian Lyon, Ian Walkden (Capt), Mark Fearnley, Steven Appleton, John Humphreys

missing - Mark Warburton, Chris Chambers, Tony Boardman, Andy Long, Neil Birchall, David Evans,

The cricket section will once again be looking to send away more people for ECB accredited coaching courses this winter with Liam Horsfield, Chris Edge, Joe McDonough, Barry Evans and Martin Murnan taking up residency on the courses. Ant Barlow as always will be holding winter coaching clinics while around 20 of the juniors will be attending St Helens district trials and Liam Jenkins, Alex Lyon and Rohan Bhalla attending full Lancashire trials. So there is much news coming out of the cricket section this post season. The section will celebrate its presentation evenings for juniors on the 3rd November from half seven while the seniors have their presentation dinner on the 10th with three courses and speeches from all the captains and coaches.

Tennis
The tennis season ended brilliantly with a fantastic barbeque and fun day for the juniors which emphasised a lot of the hardwork Amanda has put into developing the junior section at Newton and deserves a lot of credit for her endeavours. The seniors finished strongly but will be looking to recruit in the winter especially ladies tennis which could do with a few more numbers for the start of next year. If anyone is interested then please get in touch. The annual Statham Lodge dinner / dance takes place shortly so please contact your club secretary for further details.

Bowls

The bowls section as always require new players and if anyone is interested in participating in bowls then please seek out the contacts and get yourself down.

Newton Raiders  Ladies Rounders Team

The raiders rounders team followed up on last years excellent season with an even better one finishing runners up in the cup. Newton raiders went into the final as underdogs but went into the half time break a rounder up, however experienceand a few missed catches told as the Raiders fell short in the final count. However the progress the side made this year is encouraging for future challenges. Once more if anyone is interested in participating in ladies rounders then please seek out the contacts on the website and get in touch, they are an excellent group and deserve our encouragement.

So now the winter season starts and already the rugby league and union have kicked off to indifferent starts but optimism remains strong while to football side appears to be settling in okay. Full fixture lists are available in the club and most games are played on Saturday afternoons so please come down and support our winter section. The Hockey season also starts and they play at Selwyn Jones on Saturday afternoons.

Tennis website closes

With the closure of the Total-tennis site the tennis website has unfortunately had to close, for now details will be fed throuh this site, however there may potentially be a new site created shortly so keep logging back in for further details.

New photos from our sections

So far the site is a little cricket dominated, if you feel your section is being underrepresented then please send your photos and storys to Ant Barlow at ant.barlow1@btinternet.com or through the committee at the next meeting.

New Website development

The website will get an overhaul this November already you can see new developments such as a slide show photo gallery which has some new photos, it also needs some new photos, there are new pages and improved communication tools, shortly there will be updatedcommunication contacts and hopefully a more appropriate colour scheming and imaging.
